A is an apple,
Polished and bright—
I eat one with breakfast
And one every night.B is a birch,
With peeling white bark,
That blends with the forest,
At night in the dark.C is a catfish,
Caught by a netter
And held in the air
Which he wishes were wetter.D is a dove,
Who is wishing you peace,
Whose beak holds a branch
With a single green leaf.E is an elephant,
Holding the past,
Between two great ears
As he strolls through the grass.F is the face
Of a girl on the stage,
Quoting what Shakespeare
First wrote on a page.G is a goat,
Who galloped away,
To live with the horses
And share in their hay.H is a hen,
Who sits on her eggs,
Ignoring the cramps
In her spindly legs.I is an icicle,
Inching its way,
Longer and longer
Until a warm day.J is a jam
That I just jarred last night—
The impulse was in me,
The berries were ripe.K is a little kite,
Tied to a string,
Held by a little girl
Wearing a ring.L is a llama,
Looking quite blue,
Leave him alone
Or he’ll spit spit at you!M is a man
Who sits in the middle
In back of a vehicle
Yelling “Padiddle!”N is a nail,
That holds up a frame,
That holds in a painting
Of steelwork and cranes.O is an oyster,
Trapped in a shell,
Kicking his legs
And screaming for help.P is a parrot
Who mimics your words,
So watch what you say
When your voice can be heard!Q is a quail
Who is small to a goose,
But large to a chickadee
High in a spruce.R is a rabbit,
Who sleeps in a den,
Who dreams of one cabbage,
Then five and then ten.S is a stump
That once was a tree,
Whose side casts a sprout
Holding hopeful green leaves.T is a tiger,
Who goes “grrr, grrr, growl”,
But he’s only speaking
The way he knows how.U is a unicorn,
Does it exist?
The thought’s overwhelming—
I’m prompted to sit!V is a violet
There in the shade,
Its petals are purple,
Or “violet” some say.W is water,
Filling a stream,
Bound for a river,
And then for the sea.X is a xylophone,
Playing a song,
Ding, ding, dang, ding,
Ding, dang, ding, ding dang dong!Y is a yellow tailed
Male kangaroo,
There is his lady,
A yellow tail too.Z is a zebra,
We thought was a horse,
Until he said “Sirs,
I’m a zebra of course!”
