Sourdough starter freezes perfectly.
Freeze a couple tablespoons of it perhaps in a zip-loc sandwich bag, with the name of the starter and date written on it.
If someone throws out your starter, pull out the backup, thaw for a few hours, and refresh - three or four days probably.
The starter will be OK in the freezer for months or perhaps years.
