Cidering Day

The Volvo's huge trunk was level full of apples. Here you see Bob feeding them into the 1930s-era crusher. The scariest part of the whole rig, at the bottom of the funnel-shaped hopper, is a spinning eight-inch wooden drum bristling with square headed nails, which would cheerfully draw in and shred any part of your body that came in contact with them.

The chopped apples collect in the box underneath. We shovel them through the crusher a couple of times, and then shovel them into "cheeses" in the press. Each "cheese" is a 2" thick layer of apple pulp wrapped in burlap, separated by hardwood racks. Mike's putting the blocks on the top of the cheeses in preparation for pressing.
