Steps

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Let stand about 10 minutes, until frothy.
  2. Stir in white sugar, milk, beaten egg, salt, and enough bread flour to make a soft dough.
  3. Knead for 6 to 8 minutes on a lightly floured surface, or until smooth.
  4. Place dough in a well oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and set aside to rise.
  5. Let it rise until the dough has doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down dough, and knead in minced garlic (optional).
  7. Pinch off small handfuls of dough about the size of a golf ball.
  8. Knead a couple of times to make a smooth ball, then roll with the rolling pin into a slipper shape.
  9. Let rest about 15 minutes and preheat grill or waffle iron.
  10. Lightly oil grill.
  11. Place dough on grill, brush top side with butter, and cook for 3-5 minutes, or until puffy and unevenly browned.
  12. Turn over and brush cooked side with butter and cook for a little less time, until unevenly browned.
  13. Continue the process until all the naan has been prepared.
