Notes for Henry Blades
An Englishman, who served his time on a British man-of-war. He received town lot N#16 in Parrs Division, Shelburne and Loyalist Land Grant #482 to John Sutherland and 80 others shows he received 100 acres at Birchtown on May 31, 1786 (Hartz Point). He also received a grant in Pubnico, Yarmouth County on April 28, 1807. The Pubnico grant refers to Henry Blades, his wife and 6 children. His estate papers #A27 include a petition, dated January 8, 1870 addressed to Maria Blades widow and her eldest son Robert and Sarah Stoddard requesting that a bill owed by Henry to Jeremiah Stoddard be paid before Henry's estate was settled. The bill was under $200.00.
He was impressed on the frigate "Shannon" and was on board when the fight with the "Chesapeake" took place. He returned to Pubnico and settled there.
Henry lost his 300 acres of land in Shelburne (Hartz Point) in a gambling game.
Came to Shelburne from New York in 1783 / 1784, when it was evacuated by the British at the end of the American Revolution.
