Economics & Performance

Once on the house, the sunroom reduced the heating bill by one third (wood and oil) and in the summer cooled the whole house.

Description

This house was built by Kenny MacDonald to look like an old PEI farm house. A 24 foot by about 10 foot greenhouse/sunroom was added to mimic a PEI sun porch, except that it heats the house during sunny winter days. It is open to the house via a door in one room and a window in another. It has in-floor heat from an oil furnace. It takes from the house at night but gives way more than it receives.

The house is oriented to the road. It receives southwest light which is good for growing and maximum light/heat gain. The width is perfect for maximum gain and minimum loss but not quite wide enough for a dining room. Bamboo blinds cool the room in the summer which thus cools the house....makes the room feel like a screened porch, being right on a small road they also help with privacy.

South windows are two layer thermal pane and the east and west windows vent including three Velux skylights. There is also a small venting window placed high on east and west walls for additional venting.,
