Economics & Performance

Has been operating successfully for 25 years. The solar plastic solar glazing has whitened and reduced the amount of solar radiation captured but still provides a major portion of the space heating of the house.

Lot Characteristics

Surrounded by a 7 acre open field - slight 10 ft high hill

Description

Built a passive solar house in 1978 and have been heating with wood and solar ever since. South facing vertical solar windows - storage in insulated concrete/ceramic tile floor - warm air circulation via thermostatically contolled fan. See "Bogan_house_info.pdf" for more details and data (1979-1980) Two storey, no basement, on a concrete slab embedded the south side of a 4 ft rise. Two storey, south facing solar wall of windows. Only auxiliary heating is a wood stove on the lower level. The house is an open plan construction for good circulation of air - only the bedrooms and bathroom have doors. A thermostatically-controlled fan on the upper level recirculates hotter air upstairs to the lower level via the open staircase.

What would we do different?

Solar Windows are glass reinforced polyester in wood frames. Next Time: glass in regular (plastic coated) window frames. Add more insulation below the floor. Install air ducts for recirculating air. Build a slightly larger House.
