Purpose

Dwelling with passive solar heating., Greenhouse space for horticulture.

Economics & Performance

On an annual basis, approx. 50% of heat is solar derived., Example of two winter days, one sunny, one cloudy:, Day Period Source KW, 16 Jan 1989 0600-2400 Solar 48.14, 17 Jan 1989 0600-1800 NSPI 28.82, The sunny provided 100% of heating requirement in addition to 60+ % excess.

Lot Characteristics

SSW facing slope. Eastern boundary Black Duck Run Estuary, western boundary bedrock ridge elev. 40+ m.

Comments

House originally had sloped (60 degree) glazing to maximize winter gain. Current vertical replacement glazing has approx 50% more area and yields essentially the same net solar gain as the original design., House is very pleasant environment in which to live in addition to being energy efficient.
