Gear

Some specialized gear is required for midi on a guitar.

The guitar is a Godin ACS-SA midi capable nylon string electric.

Midi guitars have a separate pickup on each string.

Each pickup is connected to separate pins on a 13 pin GK jack.

A GK cable with 13 pin plugs connects the midi guitar to a Roland GR-55 Guitar Synthesizer.

A guitar synth interprets the signal on each string to determine which notes are being played. The user can map notes to the sounds of various musical instruments such as pianos, organs, flutes, violins, etc. The mapping can be changed while playing using foot switches. The guitar is played finger style and the synth creates the sound of various instruments.

An Alesis SR-18 drum machine provides drum and percussion sounds for accompaniment. The patterns can be changed while playing using foot switches.

The synth and the drum machine are connected to a Roland KC-220 keyboard amplifier which produces the audible sound.

A Behringer U-Phoria analog-to-digital converter is used to capture the output of the amplifier to a computer which an program records as mp3 files.
