Mini Review: Hfx e-Scooter

This morning I didn’t feel like riding my forty-year-old 12-speed "touring" bike (that is, skinny tires + rack) to work so Paul drove me. After, I used the Hfx e-Scooter app to find the nearest one — 30 seconds walk away — and unlock it to go home. This was my first useful, non-joyride.

The scooter has a phone holder at the top of the handlebars which I discovered also has a wireless charging pad. There are signal lights like a motorcycle and a cute bicycle-style bell.

When I got home I just left it on the grass between the street and sidewalk and ended my ride using the app, which re-locks the scooter and makes it available - so a neighbour might drive it somewhere later, and or if not, someone from the company will pick it up overnight.

The stats: 2.8km, top speed 23.8km/h; trip time was 15 minutes, exactly what it would have taken me on the bicycle or in the car. The cost was $6.38 + tax.

Was it fun? Yeah, kinda. Because of your stance, the thing tends to be a bit wobbly; it's not an elegant ride like a bicycle, but it has its own coolness value.

Was it seven bucks worth of fun? No, not really. If you have a bicycle, that's a better ride.
