Speaker's Bureau (or maybe just Dan) visit to Spencer House This came out of a chance meeting when Kaitlyn & Dan went there for a Quaker meeting. November 20, 2024 Contact at Spencer House: Brittany Lambert <connect@spencerhouse.ca> Brittany: I'm just writing to confirm that upcoming Spencer House and Elderberries collaboration as well as your Lunch and Learn time speaking about your work as a historian. I have you scheduled in for next week and there are some members who are very excited. It's due time we start recognizing our queer members formally in our programming so I'm very excited to see how this goes! "The topic can be anything at all! I'm more interested in everyone having fun and enjoying themselves than ensuring it's a "wellness" activity because building community is wellness! You can invite as many Elderberries as you like, the more the merrier. I think the room fits about 35 people seated and even after that we'd make it work if we needed to. The only presentation I think we'd like to see is on what The Elderberries are/what they do and how to get involved. I would hope that this event not only introduces the Elderberries to Spencer House but also Spencer House to the Elderberries! We could plan a game or come up with a storytelling/sharing prompt if you think that might be a good idea? " ===Dan's Talk=== * My talk about doing history work (how long do you want this to be?) at 12:30, right? * An introduction to the Elderberries (just 5 minutes) * And a storytelling round table which I will record β history, you know β the topic will be, βThe LGBT Folk (or Queer Folk) in my community when I was growing up.β ===History Work=== * Introduce Dan - moved to Halifax in 1981 Kings, came out a couple years later, I love this city * Got involved in Wayves. * long lecture: the addiction of journalism: it gets you involved in EVERYTHING. * So in the 1990s, people started giving me information - random chunks * Then, the wiki - a guy named Mike Godfrey had heard about this web publishing thing. at the time you needed to write HTML a kind of code. Ward Cunningham created Wiki. Mike installed it and wrote hundreds of pages - some serious, some silly. * 2002 : I created a catalog of drag queens in it - to counter boredom * 2004: 1000 pages, Dan takes it over * Why wiki is so cool * today: . I just created a page for Halfiax Poet Laureate Tanya Davis because she wrote a poem when Raymond Taavel was murdered, which Hugo Dann wrote about for his * Do you see how I get rabbitholed? ===Doing History Now=== * All kinds of things to do ** Interviews ** Archiving objects ** Captioning pictures ** Lecture on picture captions ** Lecture on photo albums ** Why it's so important to do this work * Allison Self Introduction ===Round Table=== Tell the story about, in your home town, the person that people talked about being homosexual.
