2011-02-06 Public Meeting

Spirit Place board member Louisa Horne will give a talk on the origins and development of the St John's United Church Spirit Place project on Sunday February 5, 2011, at 2:30 pm, at Spencer House Senior Centre, 5506 Morris Street, Halifax.

This event is co-sponsored by Wayves and Elderberries (formerly the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project LGBT Elders Group).

Spirit Place is planned to occupy the space formerely used by the church : it will include LGBT-positive residential units, worship space, offices for the congregation, meeeting spaces, and parking.

Although many welcome this development, some objections have risen on the grounds of building height and inappropriaate land use. City Council has decided to defer a decision on approval until after a public input process can be completed. Dates for a public input meeting have not yet been set.

A false perception that the residential units will be LGBT only, rather than LGBT positive, has also drawn negative comment.

A potluck social will fllow the talk. Please bring something you would enjoy eating, preferably finger food, sandwiches, sweets, etc. Coffee and tea will be provided. Alcohol-free, scent-free, and pet-free, please.

This presentation is open to the general public. Free admission. Limited parking at the back. Accessible entry at the side.
