2022 Pride CEFP Proposal

Last edit

Summary: Pride Funding Application from Elderberries and Wayves, 2022.

Changed:

< * Total $900 requested from Pride

to

> * Total $700 requested from Pride

Changed:

< We request funding for a researcher / writer to do interviews and write the story of what must have been a swift course of events, of people saying, "We have to do something" and doing it, in Halifax in 1971. Stonewall in New York was in 1969; we registered a society with the Registry of Joint Stocks in 1972. Something must have happened in 1971 to bring people together, at a kitchen table, or a party; there must have been a reason for it. This research will reveal the reasons and the process.
< The format will be under 1000 words, in an exciting style reminiscent of the telling of the New York Stonewall story.
< The Elderberries and Wayves will be supporting this project both financially and with people's time. Producer/publisher Dan MacKay is in discussion with a few journalists, researchers and writers.
< We are submitting two interrelated proposals. The other is for auxiliary expenses for the Elders Hangout to make it into a celebration of the 50th anniversary of GAE. The "Creation" document will be presented at that event.

> There is a piece of gay Halifax history that hasn't been told in either Rebecca Rose's _Before The Parade_ or in the Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia. It is the story of something that happened in 1971 to create the Gay Alliance for Equality in 1972 - fifty years ago this year.
> This research will reveal the reasons and the process, credit the people, and create an exciting, short telling of the story of this swift course of action and bravery. The format will be under 1000 words, in an exciting style reminiscent of the very familiar telling of the New York Stonewall story. The writer will be available to present the story at the Elders Hangout and other Pride events where it would be germane; the story will be in the public domain.
> This is an important time to do it because:
> • it is the 50th anniversary of the event
> • this story has not been documented and it is one of a kind; it is a story that will be reprinted and retold throughout the history of LGBTQ Nova Scotia, and
> • the people who can tell the story are getting old and will not be able to tell the story for much longer.

Elderberries and Wayves will be supporting this project both financially and with people's time. We have a relationship with a researcher / writer / journalist who is excited to do the work.
> We are submitting two interrelated proposals. The other is for auxiliary expenses for the Elders Hangout to make it into a celebration of the 50th anniversary of GAE. The "Genesis" document will be presented at that event.

Deleted:

< ''Online Description:'' Presentation of GAE's genesis story : how the organization came about, written from interviews with the people who were there.
< This very short history will be presented twice, by the author, during the Pride Elders Hangout.

REVISION IN PROGRESS

There are two proposals here

The parts entitled "Pride Submission" are the answers to the questions in the Pride Funding Application.

Name: Elders Hangout: 50th Anniversary of the first LGBTQ organization in Nova Scotia (Gay Alliance for Equality)

We are submitting two interrelated proposals. The first is for auxiliary expenses to make the Elders Hangout 2022 into a reunion and celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of GAE. The second is for the research and writing of a short description of the creation of GAE in 1971 - 1972.

Pride Submission 1: Elders Hangout / 50th Anniversary Reunion

Title

GAE 50th Anniversary Reunion (an enhanced Elders Hangout event)

In 150 words or less, please summarize your event

Reunion style event : drop in anytime during a four-hour window. People can grab some food and a beverage, sit down and catch up with fellow elders OR engage in some storytelling of Halifax's rich queer history OR sit back and listen in.

At the front of the tent, near the stage/screen, we'll have a slideshow, a presentation about the beginnings of GAE, and some discussions of historical finer points, arranged into (probably) 1-hour blocks - half hour presentation, 15 minute Q&A, 15 minute break.

This is billed as an Elders Hangout, but all are welcome. There can be discussions about how the world is different, or you can just sit back and listen to stories about the good, and bad, old days.

The Elderberries and Wayves publisher Dan MacKay are submitting two interrelated proposals. The first is for auxiliary expenses for the Elders Hangout to make it into a celebration of the 50th anniversary of GAE. The second is for the research and writing of a short article on what must have been the exciting creation of GAE in 1971 - 1972.

In 150 words or less, please summarize your reasons for hosting this event

This year is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Gay Alliance for Equality, the first LGBTQ organization in Nova Scotia, and we're looking forward to celebrating.

Part of the funding is for a couple of tours of places significant to our community; these tours wouldn't be during the Hangout but at other times during the Festival.

Print Description: Calling all elders and friends of elders! This year, we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Gay Alliance for Equality, fifty years of an organized 2SLGBTQ+ community. That deserves a reunion. There will be conversation and catching up, Sign interpretation, panel discussions, story telling, and food.

If you need assistance to attend, please contact us.

Research & writing for the "Creation" story for our community.

In 150 words or less, please summarize your event

There is a piece of gay Halifax history that hasn't been told in either Rebecca Rose's _Before The Parade_ or in the Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia. It is the story of something that happened in 1971 to create the Gay Alliance for Equality in 1972 - fifty years ago this year.

The writer will be available to present the story at the Elders Hangout and other Pride events where it would be germane; the story will be in the public domain.

This is an important time to do it because: • it is the 50th anniversary of the event • this story has not been documented and it is one of a kind; it is a story that will be reprinted and retold throughout the history of LGBTQ Nova Scotia, and • the people who can tell the story are getting old and will not be able to tell the story for much longer.

There is a piece of gay Halifax history that hasn't been told in either Rebecca Rose's _Before The Parade_ or in the Halifax Rainbow Encyclopedia, and this is an important time to do it:

Print Description: Presentation of the story of GAE's genesis story, how the organization came about, written from interviews with the people who were there.

This very short history, and how it was created, will be presented twice, by the author, during the Pride Elders Hangout.
