Greetings Dear Friends,

We would like to let you know about our new organization called the “LGBT Elders Group”. The initiative behind this group comes from the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project, and the Group’s objective is to provide a social get-together for LGBT seniors aged 50+ while at the same time providing the group with information and support on subjects specifically related to LGBT Elder issues. We hope you will join us on the dates indicated below.

Thus far we have had our third potluck get-together on the afternoon of October 17 at SpencerHouse on Morris Street, Halifax, NS, where lawyer Tuma Young provided an informative (and humourous) introduction to Wills and Estates.

To keep some momentum going the Group has established a LGBT Elders Social Committee to plan each monthly event with input from all the Group. Committee members are Lynn Murphy, Anita Louise Martinez, Hal Walsh, Dan MacKay and Nick Honig. So far the Committee has planned some exciting programs:

November 21, 2pm – 5pm: A round table discussion on the merits and drawbacks of being a LGBT single person. Eveen if you are now part of a longstanding couple, you were single once and have something to share. Location-Spencer House.

December 10, 7pm – 10pm: This is our Christmas Party to be held in the Sky Lounge of Nick and Tuma’s apartment building, 2717 Gladstone Street, Halifax, NS. For this event please bring your favorite dish, main or dessert or both, and an alcoholic drink if you would like one. The group will be providing soft drinks, coffee and tea. Since there is a small fee for the use of the room we have to ask that each person attending bring $2 to cover expenses. All events, but this one in particular, are an opportunity for us to renew old friendships and to engage in interesting and stimulating dialog.

January 16, 2pm – 5pm: This is the “get rid of the blues” event where we will have live music to lift our spirits. If there are any musicians out there who would be willing to share their talents please let us know. Location-Spencer House.

February 20, 2pm – 5pm: For this get-together we hope that everyone can bring some photos showing LGBT events or activities of the past. Of course a story to go with the photos will make it so much more interesting. Location-Spencer House.

March 20, 2pm – 5pm: Although the details have not been finalized for this get-together it has tentatively been suggested that we have a discussion on financial matters. Location- Spencer House.

All events are potlucks, so get out your recipes! For Spencer House socials, finger foods (sandwiches, sweets, snacks, etc) are preferred.

If you have any questions, concerns or need transportation please contact Lynn Murphy at 902-455-0193 or Nick Honig at 902-880-6881.

The Committee members and the Group hope to see you at the next gathering. For some of us it’s been way too long since we saw each other and said hello.
