Dan Meeting with ACE - Advocates for the Care of the Elderly via Zoom.
- Paul Jenkins: Social worker based out of Truro
- Gary Macleod: based out of Halifax
Ace was formed in 2006. At the VG Hospital "Transition" unit we saw abuse, neglect, dirty lockers, people treated badly. My mom was living in a dump.
We now have 9 members: 1 nurse, 1 CCA. resident in Long Term Care, etc.
They are contacting the Elderberries in order to diversify - they are two str8 white guys; they can't make assumptions about the 2SLGBTQ community.
The top projects?
- International standard of 4.1 hours of care per day; Nova Scotia is only part way there
- And a list of 21 things
- And everything else
Dan's points
- I Was involved with the CCA program 20 years ago
- Story of Hugo > _Gen Silent_ > concern in our community
- Creation of Elderberries out of NSRAP
- Would like to see an anti-bigotry module in the CCA
- Need to deal with fear of homophobia and enabling reporting of it, in our own population.
- Tepid interest in Q Housing. That is; everyone's interested, no one wants to actually do anything.
Dan's Q's
- what about the big picture: more beds, more affordable, offload hospital beds & staff, offloads emergency rooms
Future ideas
Geographic disparities, e.g. maybe there's no trans/homophobia in Halifax, but maybe it happens and goes unreported in Sydney, Amherst, Yarmouth.
Idea of a report card / annual survey.
We might need to get children / partners of people to help with this report card.
It would have to be anonymous - maybe that could be our role.
Would like to get together face to face. I suggested supper at Jenny’s.
