Elderberries Organizing Committee Meeting : August 22, 2011
Present: Norval, Heather, Anita, Lynn, Dan (notes), Nick
Minutes of the last meeting: not available. Probably only three people were there and there was no quorum.
Lynn and Dan and Jim Morrison, a prof from St Mary's presented to around forty people about how and why to preserve LGBT history.
Pennants: we made about a hundred, and almost all were sold; a few people have a little stash of them which we will reclaim for sale at future Elderberry events. Some "seconds" got made into a tablecloth for the picnic. Thanks to Pat Dingle for design and sewing. Profits after all bills paid : $91.00 so far.
Brochures: 250 were printed and lots are still available for events.
Yesterday's event: 24 people showed up at about 2:00 pm, including several new people. We commandeered the Gazebo at the Dingle Park but got booted out an hour later by a Buddhist Wedding. Luckily that fit with the progress of the meal and we re-encamped onto the grass for another couple of hours, and bonded over cornbread and live classical music from the wedding party. Most people packed up around 5:00 pm. We got several emails thanking us for hosting the event.
Future benefit : Company House: cost model confirmed - we could lose money.
ANITA will create the cards within a week from now.
The LGBT Anglican group has asked if we can move our event from the 3rd to 4th Sunday of the month so there would be no conflict with their monthly Eucharist service..
ANITA and HEATHER will contact Deb Dostal at SpencerHouse to see if the fourth Sunday is free for us; also to review opening and closing procedures as they may have changed.
September 18th: NICK will talk about photography with the title, "Falling In Love With Pictures", at SpencerHouse.
September 16-17-18: Doctors Without Borders are setting up a "refugee camp" in Halifax, with possibly a speaker on LGBT refugees specifically. We'll invite the membership to go to see it together.
October 23rd: Nadine Lapierre talks about her lesbian mystery and being an author.
November 27th: Recipe Exchange. LYNN to find a nutritionist speaker. Theme "Cooking For One Or Two On A Budget." DAN will create a recipe book for all recipes submitted one week before the event.
Christmas: not discussed.
Reclaim The Night: It's a march in October against violence. Lynn is on their committee. Decided not to participate officially.
Fund Raising Dance: DAN will ask Wolf if he'd do it, and how much he would charge.
ANITA will ask Veith House and find out if it's available, and when, say, 7-11 on a Saturday evening. And she will ask whether alcohol is allowed on site.
NSRAP is setting up an Elders Issues Committee for political stuff. LYNN is on the committee, which has not met yet, and will report back, especially if there is a need for an additional committee member perhaps to come from Elderberries.
Next meeting: September 26th at Lynn's Place.
Meeting adjourned at 8:30. Thanks all!
