Regrets: Norval Collins
The exposure that Solar Nova Scotia received last year has provided a significant boost in our visibility over the last few months. This is, in large part due to hosting the 26th national Solar Energy conference - Rise and Shine 2000 - in October. Although we would have liked to have a larger audience, it was a very successful conference. The response from delegates, tradeshow participants and sponsors, was very enthusiastic. Among the successful events were Donald Aitken's public lecture at Daltech, Kevin Jeffrey's Off-grid 101 lecture, and the Salvaged Solar Flair.
Rise and Shine was possible because of the tremendous support we had from the organizing committee, our sponsors and our volunteers. The enthusiasm that was generated by the conference has carried on in a group informally called the Solar Nova Scotia Action Group. Doug Rowland and Tom Krausse will speak more about this later.
Public interest is also evident in our membership. Membership has grown to 17 corporate members, and 60 individual members.
Thanks are due to Norval and Dan for putting together three newsletters last year. This continues to be an important way to keep our members up-to-date and reach out to the public.
Solar Nova Scotia carried on our activities last year, including:
The web site plays an important role in gaining interest in Solar Nova Scotia. Dan has been keeping the site current with events, minutes, and has even added some images of Solar houses. The URL is http://chebucto.ns.ca/Technology/SolarNS/.
The SNS crew continues to hold informal gatherings at Maxwell's Plum on Friday afternoons at 5:00. Everyone is welcome.

Doug and Tom introduced the "Solar Nova Scotia Action Group", 7 or 8 people assembled from the RS2000 volunteers getting together to do communication, community outreach and education, and other projects.
The enthusiasm generated by the success of Rise and Shine 2000 has resulted in the formation of the SNS 'Action Group'. The main objective of the Group is to develop methods by which SNS could reach more people with the message of the need for conservation, utilization of renewable energy, and incorporation of ecological sustainability in the built environment. To date two related goals to achieve this objective have been identified; the development of a communication and education program, and contributing in some fashion to the facilitation of real life, preferably high profile, examples of sustainable buildings. The purpose of the later would be to show that an approach to building that incorporates sustainability is not only better for the environment, but also clearly better for the individual, society, and the bottom line. Additional ideas are being put forward by other SNS members. As a first step in facilitating these goals, the Group has begun the process of seeking funding sources.
The group recently met with Wayne Barchard, Environment Canada Industrial Pollution Group who was enthused.
Keith moved that Solar NS approves that Tom lead the Action Group as a subcommittee for outreach and communication. Phil seconded, motion carried.
