Solar south

Use Solar south to orient your Solar Collectors and your Energy efficient home.

Here's how to find Solar South:

  1. Use your GPS or look in the paper for the sunrise and sunset times for today.
  2. Calculate the time halfway in between. For instance, on 2007-04-25 (well, every April 25th :-) sunrise is at 06:15 and sunset is at 20:10, so solar noon is at 13:12.
  3. Get a plumb-bob of some kind -- a rock on a string -- ready for 13:12.
  4. The shadow cast from your plumb-bob is solar north-south; your string is at the south end.
