2018 Pride CEFP Proposal

Name: Elderberries LGBT Elders Salon. Four hours session, ending no later than 9pm.

• A large space, say, the floor part of the big auditorium at the library, or maybe the much smaller Bus Stop Theatre or ex Company House
• Finger food and refreshments at a table
• Maybe a bar, proceeds going to the Youth Project
• Maybe Chris Aucoin’s history exhibit set up on a table in one corner
• A few things to sell - maybe bound copies of Scott MacNeil & Reg Giles’ story cycles, mugs, Robin’s This Way Out, or other stuff

And then two of:

• Computer with big screen and a slideshow of old photos, with two Elders to narrate and answer questions.
• Round table with another couple elders telling stories of The Olde Days and arguing about the finer points of who-and-why, and playing, "That Reminds Me Of A story".
• Reading of chunks from Reg Giles' and Scott MacNeil's pieces with q&a after.
• Colouring book sheets and pencils & crayons out, with images from lgbt halifax.
• Human Library format one-on-one interaction with an Elderberry

Budget

• $300 catering
• $400 for space
• $200 honoraria
• $200 tech
• (2-300 contributed by Elderberries)
• Total $900 requested from Pride

Queer Pioneers History Salon

In 150 words or less, please summarize your event

Anytime during a four-hour window, drop in, grab some food and a beverage, sit down and participate in some storytelling of Halifax's rich queer history. Meet with some of the veterans who worked hard to make Halifax a Pride-ful place, and AUA -- ask us anything about what it was like, what it felt like, how we lived and loved and worked to change the world and change Halifax. We'll have a history display up, photos flashing by on a screen that our elders can talk about, and perhaps a Human Library where you can talk one-on-one with someone who had a hand in creating the community that you now enjoy. Or, you can just sit back and listen to the old-timers tell stories about the good, and bad, old days, around a big table.

We've been planning this event for several years, and it's time to do it. We want to provide the opportunity for youth and elders to connect, and for people to share stories from times when it hasn't always been like this. The Elderberries has a formidable resource of storytellers who regularly volunteer to do this type of presentation so it is definitely in our wheelhouse.
